EDS Foundation: 2008 Grant Recipients
Congratulations to the following 2008 EDS Foundation grant recipients.
General Education
Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund – Washington, DC
The EDS Foundation awarded Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $100,000. HDSF is a year-round not-for-profit organization committed to expanding the academic and career horizons of Washington, D.C. public school students. The foundation grant will fund general operating support.
Hoop Dreams has paired more than 770 D.C. students and mentors from the local business community; facilitated more than 250 internships; engaged more than 1,000 volunteers in community work; coached approximately 570 students through SAT prep programs in partnership with The Princeton Review; and helped more than 850 inner city students reach college with more than 1,630 scholarships totaling $3 million.
Since 1996 EDS has provided board membership, scholarship sponsorship, technical support, in-kind support and employee volunteers.
Junior Achievement of Chisholm Trail – Fort Worth, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail (JA) shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $7,500. JA's mission is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. The foundation grant will support JA programs at South Euless Elementary School. Students in grades kindergarten through 6th grade will participate in JA programs delivered by EDS volunteers in the Fort Worth area. During the 2007-2008 school year 635 students at South Euless Elementary School participated in JA programs.
Since 2003 EDS has provided volunteer support.
Junior Achievement of Eastern Oklahoma – Tulsa, OK
The EDS Foundation awarded Junior Achievement of Eastern Oklahoma (JAEOK) shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $20,000. JAEOK serves more than 36,000 students by offering more than 20 K-12 curricula options to educators. The foundation grant will fund the JA Biz Town program, the JA Investor Challenge, JA in a Day and the Skills of Success Project.
Since 2001 EDS has provided board membership support and over 100 employee volunteers.
Junior Achievement – Rocky Mountain – Denver, CO
The EDS Foundation awarded Junior Achievement – Rocky Mountain shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $12,500. JA Rocky Mountain expects to reach 90,000 students in metro Denver and Northern Colorado during the 2007-2008 school year through the collaboration of more than 3,300 educators and community volunteers. The foundation grant will fund JA's educational programs in 25 classrooms taught by EDS volunteers impacting 575 students.
Since 2003 EDS has provided board membership support, in-class volunteers, fundraising activities and in-kind support to redesign and upgrade its Web site.
Plano Independent School District (ISD) Education Foundation – Plano, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded the Plano ISD Foundation a check in the amount of $50,000. The Plano ISD is a public school district that serves 53,000 students on 68 campuses. The purpose of the Plano ISD Foundation is to fund priority instructional projects identified by the district for which tax dollars are unavailable. The Plano ISD Foundation generates private support for priority needs such as science, technology, engineering and math instruction; programs to recruit and retain teachers; innovation in classroom instruction; and assistance to families of poverty with student scholarships for fee-based instructional programs. The foundation grant will fund the Middle School Math Improvement Initiative.
Since 2007 EDS has provided Board participation.
Plano Symphony Orchestra Association – Plano, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded the Plano Symphony Orchestra Association a check in the amount of $44,000. Established in 1983, the Plano Symphony Orchestra's mission is to inspire, educate, entertain and involve the children, youth and adults in the communities of North Texas in the enjoyment of orchestral music. The symphony provides educational Artreach programs to the children and youth in North Texas. The program includes a fourth-grade school concert series, The Collin County Young Artist Competition, Family Symphony Sundays, and Instrument Petting Zoo. The foundation grant will fund the symphony education programs, specifically the fourth grade Symphony Sampler concerts and the Family Sunday Series.
Since 1992 EDS has provided Advisory Council participation, general volunteer support, guild participation, database programming and Web site maintenance.
Health & Human Services
Detroit Institute for Children – Detroit, MI
The EDS Foundation awarded the Detroit Institute for Children (DIC) shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $92,250. DIC serves disabled children and their entire families helping them to maximize their potential through evaluation, treatment, education, research, and development. The DIC offers families a “one-stop shop” where patients may visit the clinic and take advantage of an array of more than 25 multidisciplinary outpatient services. The foundation grant will fund medical records software, allowing DIC to track the progress of patients receiving ongoing therapy and treatment.
Since 2002 EDS has provided volunteer support through facility upkeep, summer camp activities and board participation.
Newhouse – Kansas City, MO
The EDS Foundation awarded Newhouse shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $25,000. Newhouse provides outreach and shelter for battered women and children. Founded in 1971, Newhouse has 86 beds and provides free, comprehensive services to women and children who are without a home due to poverty and violence. In 2007 Newhouse served 304 women and 200 children. The foundation grant will fund general operating support.
Since 2004 EDS has participated as a board member and provided volunteer support in a variety of activities.
Technology Solutions
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma – Tulsa, OK
The EDS Foundation awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma (BBBSOK) a check in the amount of $26,450. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an agency that represents more than 100 hundred years of establishing one-on-one mentoring relationships primarily based on the needs of at-risk children who need positive guidance in their young lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma's vision is to provide a Big Brother or Big Sister for every Oklahoma child who needs and wants one. In 2007, BBBSOK served 2,335 children in match relationships across the state. The foundation grant will fund Raiser's Edge Fundraising Donor Management Software and Training.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan – Farmington Hills, MI
The EDS Foundation awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $45,614. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan serves students aged 6-18 at 13 clubs in the Southeastern Michigan area. The Club offers a safe haven during non-school hours where children can have fun while learning important life skills. In 2007 more than 26,000 youth were served. The foundation grant will help create a computer clubhouse at the Fauver-Martin Club in Highland Park, MI.
For more than18 years EDS has provided board membership support, technology support and year-round volunteer activities.
Bridge Breast Network – Dallas, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded Bridge Breast Network a check in the amount of $15,000. The Bridge Breast Network has a mission of saving lives by linking low-income, uninsured women and men to diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer. The Bridge is unique being the only nonprofit agency in North Texas that serves clients with breast issues through a one-stop program that includes community medical referrals, medical case management, breast health education and a network of physicians and healthcare practitioners. Founded in 1992, The Bridge has helped 27,000 clients. The foundation grant will support a Client-Provider Information Management Database.

Children’s Home of Easton – Easton, Pennsylvania
The EDS Foundation has awarded the Children's Home of Easton a check in the amount of $50,745. Since 1885 the Children’s Home of Easton has provided services to heal children, families and communities. The Home offers comprehensive treatment, education and counseling services to children from infancy to adulthood. The housing programs include a 24 bed emergency shelter for boys, 8 bed emergency shelter for girls, 48 bed residential program, 20 bed group home, 40 bed foster care and 8 bed independent living program. The foundation grant will fund a comprehensive technology program.
Since 2001 EDS has provided Board participation, fundraising support, event sponsorship and Global Volunteer Day volunteers.
The Discovery Museum – Sacramento, CA
The EDS Foundation awarded The Discovery Museum a check in the amount of $28,009. The Discovery Museum is a family-focused educational institution dedicated to enriching the lives of local residents and visitors to the Sacramento region by encouraging the exploration of history, science and space. The Discovery Museum's Educational Programs include: guided tours; on-site programming; and outreach programs that bring a unique approach to history, social and natural science to the classroom. Services were provided to more than 75,000 school children in the 2006-2007 school year. The foundation grant will fund a new Point of Sale and Inventory System that includes two new computers for the Science & Space Center.
Since 1998 EDS has provided general support, Global Volunteer Day volunteers and participation in the JASON program.
Junior Achievement of Dallas – Dallas, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded Junior Achievement of Dallas a check in the amount of $37,500. Junior Achievement's (JA) core purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Since 1954 JA has accomplished its purpose by providing experiences that introduce young people to the free enterprise system, engage them in relevant ways with the system and deeply impact their values and attitudes toward the system. During the 2007-2008 school year, JA of Dallas volunteers taught in more than 2,002 classrooms, changing the lives of 38,000 students in the Greater Dallas area. The foundation grant will support technology infrastructure expansion. It will also provide program support for Lively Elementary School in the Irving Independent School District (ISD) taught by EDS volunteers.
Since 1993 EDS has provided general support, in-class volunteers, board participation, fundraising support for the JA Bowl-a-thon and event sponsorship.
Junior Players – Dallas, TX
The EDS Foundation awarded Junior Players shares of EDS stock valued at approximately $15,000. Junior Players was founded in 1955 and is the oldest nonprofit children's theater organization in Dallas. The mission of Junior Players is to encourage intellectual growth, mental well being and the development of life skills in the youth of North Texas through mentoring, creative expression and participation in dramatic and art activities. The foundation grant will help provide comprehensive technology solutions including hardware, software and technological support.
Since 2002 EDS has provided board member support.
Poulton-le-Fylde St. Chad's CE Primary School – Lancashire, England
The EDS Foundation awarded Poulton-Le-Fylde St. Chad's CE Primary School a check in the amount of $40,000. The Poulton-Le-Fylde St. Chad's CE Primary School focuses on developing all of its pupils to their full intellectual, spiritual and physical potential within an atmosphere based on Christian faith in the Anglican tradition. There are currently 235 students in the school, ages 5-11. The school scores high in english, mathematics, history and science but is behind in equipping students with technology skills. The foundation grant will provide funding for computers and classroom whiteboards in their newly renovated ICT Suite/Videoconferencing Room.
EDS has provided technology planning and implementation in support of the ICT Suite as well as ongoing parental support.
